The argument between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will never be resolved. While one is a "athlete-footballer" and the other is a "extraordinary artist," Arsene Wenger tried to emphasise how both are on the same level.
The Messi vs. Ronaldo discussions have been going on for more than ten years, and it's possible that the two footballers have pushed one other to their breaking points. They have fought valiantly on the field while showing each other respect off it, making for a very interesting decade in football.
The standard "Messi vs. Ronaldo" interview question has been posed to every football player and manager, and Arsene Wenger was no exception.
The former Arsenal manager responded to a question from SoFoot in 2020 by saying: "I frequently say that Lionel Messi is the great artist and Cristiano Ronaldo is the athlete-footballer. This is the difference between the two. Everyone then favours one over the other. We favour the artist when we enjoy the game. The creative forces you to find things that you do not see or even consider while watching from the stands. Even though I don't discount the quality of the Portuguese star, it's (creative style) finer. Simply said, I think Ronaldo-style football has become the norm. This does not imply that the creative should be abandoned. To make the game more stunning and visually appealing, the rules must change.
When asked to comment on the discussion between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2019, Arsene Wenger gave a hint that Messi was his pick. He remarked, however, without openly disclosing it: "In fact, five and five of the top 10 footballers of the year are these two, proving that they are truly on the same level. I would argue that they are so brilliant that it's tough to select. In terms of creativity, Messi is also a player who can deliver the winning kick, making him perhaps a more original player than Ronaldo. Messi is the more creative player; Ronaldo is the more finisher, better in the air, and more athletic. So in essence, a player like Messi always tempts you a little bit more."By his standards, Lionel Messi had a difficult season at PSG, scoring just six goals in his first Ligue 1 campaign. Chelsea is one of the teams who could be interested in signing Cristiano Ronaldo after he joined Manchester United last season.
